Sid Meier’s Cvilization, Risk, Settlers of Catan— strategic games aimed at gaining as much territory as possible. If you’ve played these games, you love them. There's just something about taking over the world that gets a man’s ego going. The FCS really isn’t that different. The 12 of us are battling for territory calculated by the hearts of fans across the nation. Where do you stand in this battle? Where would you be with a good season? Where would you be with a bad season? The last five year’s have painted the map of where the US pledges their allegiance.

Portland Rippers

As things stand, Portland controls the Pacific Northwest and Alaska. A deep playoff run last year also has them creeping in to Northern California and due East into most of Wyoming and a sliver of Montana. Some One thing Portland might never be able to overcome is Seattle turning salmon for Tucson out of hatred for Portland.

A good season could lead to further southward expansion into California and the Bay Area, as well as more ground into Utah to eventually capture Salt Lake City. A bad season could mean a loss of territory in BSC’s home state of Montana and once owned IceCat territory in Wyoming.

Reno Cutthroats

Reno controls the whole state of Nevada as well as the parts of central California and a patch of land that includes their former home of Salt Lake City. Other key Cutthroat cities are Sacramento and Las Vegas.

A good season could mean taking over the Bay Area and taking some more land in Utah so Salt Lake City isn’t enclosed by other franchises as it currently is.  A bad season could mean losing Sacramento to the Rippers - or worse - losing the prized possession of their own home state of Las Vegas to the Javelinas.

Tucson Javelinas

The Javies completely control the Southeast. That includes the major cities in SoCal of LA and San Diego, as well as Phoenix and Tulsa due to his relationship with a previous owner. Daniel has recently creeped into the Lone Star State and even the upper Midwest where things are up for grabs.

A good season could mean further gains into Texas with the ultimate goal of reaching Dallas, as well as gaining land in Oklahoma in order to connect with Tulsa. A bad season could mean losing his land that he gained in the north since there are no real geographical connections.

Colorado IceCats

The IceCats control much of the West including the great plains and most of the Rockies. They also control Denver and parts of Kansas City, as well as the edge of Oklahoma City.

A good season could mean gaining complete control of Kansas City and Oklahoma City, as well as solidifying a place in the ambiguous upper Midwest. A bad season could mean losing both major cities that they are attempting to swipe or losing part of the Rocky Mountains to their North.

Austin Outlaws

Austin is on a bit of a cold streak and that has resulted in them losing the Western part of their home state. Despite the invasion, they are clinging to control of Texas’ major cities.

A good season could result in the Outlaws taking their state back with hopes of expanding outward into Louisiana and Oklahoma. A bad season could mean further losses in the western part of the state and losing Dallas to the Javelinas or Capitals.

BSC Jacks

The Jacks are not in a good spot as they do not control any major cities and are at risk of losing a lot of their own state. They are clinging on to portions of the Dakotas as well.

A good season could mean pushing back Portland forces and regaining all of Montana and more of the Dakotas. A bad season could mean further invasion of their home state and a complete loss of presence in other states.

Little Rock Capitals

The Fightin’ Bills are in a strange spot where their early success has led to a stronghold on central, south, west and north Arkansas, but the Riflemen’s tradition of winning long before Miller arrived has grounded east ARK in green. Despite the lost territory near Memphis, the Caps do go vertical and grab most of Missouri and Louisiana. This includes New Orleans and Parts of Kansas City, Oklahoma City, and St. Louis.

A good season could mean swiping Tulsa and St. Louis and further northward expansion in hopes of looking like the Louisiana Purchase soon. A bad season might mean losing land in Missouri or having Nashville creep even more on their turf if Brown can sustain his yearly success.

Nashville Riflemen

The Riflemen are land hogs and control much of the South, Ohio River Valley, and the Midwest. This includes several Major cities highlighted by Chicago, Indianapolis, and Tampa Bay.
A good season could mean further expansion into the Sunshine State and more gains in the Midwest.
A bad season could mean losing St Louis to the Capitals or losing parts of Florida or the city of Atlanta to the Bombers.

Charleston Bombers

The Bombers control most of the Atlantic Coast including their most prized possession of Miami.

A good season could mean gaining complete control of North Carolina or swiping Atlanta back from the Riflemen. A bad season could mean losing much of their land in Florida, including the cities of Orlando and Miami.

Virginia Beach Rovers

The Rovers are facing an uphill battle with expansion as they are sandwiched between seasoned franchises like DC and Charleston. They control coastal North Carolina, part of West Virginia, and most of their home state of Virginia. They also have some straggler Ottawa fans on the border near Ottawa.

A good season could mean westward expansion into West Virginia and parts of Ohio. Cincinnati is in reach for their first major city. A bad season could mean losing all of their land outside of Virginia and being confined to their state.

DC Anarchy

The Anarchy’s good season, combined with their cult following, allowed them to gain control of most of the Northeast, as well as parts of Ohio and Michigan. Boston, Philadelphia, and Pittsburg all fall in their territory.

A good season could mean further gains in Ohio and Michigan to have complete control of Cleveland and Detroit. A bad season Could mean losing the Northeast to The Bronx including the major city of Boston.

The Bronx

The Bronx’s struggles have led to dents in their home state of New York. Still they own most of the state as well as portions of the US-Canada border thanks to their time in Toronto.

A good season could mean gaining back complete control of their state and casually snagging more counties in the northeast from Massey. A bad season could mean losing more of their land on the border to teams that are more competitive.

Battlegrounds

We’ve got a few key areas that are completely up for grabs around the country. The first, and by a large margin the biggest, is the north end of the midwest, including Minnesota, Iowa and Wisconsin. With no FCS teams even close to this region, we can see how widespread the fandom currently is with a smattering of five or so teams sharing the load. Nashville and Tucson’s success rate has them in the best position to overtake sole possession of the territory, but nothing is set in stone.

The next one is down south where Nashville and Charleston are battling aggressively for Florida. This one is pretty evenly split and could easily swing either way in the next few years. The next three are smaller versions of our first battleground territory where a plethora of teams are scrapping for more land; Tulsa, Salt Lake City and South Dakota. All of these sit on the border of Colorado’s current jurisdiction, so another solid campaign from the IceCats could lock all of these in at once and block out Tucson, Reno and Austin.

Lastly is the battle for Ohio between DC and Nashville. This one is pretty split and could titer based on who steps up has a better 2021 season. Overall, however, this one should be back and forth for years to come as it would take a seriously dry spell from one of the two franchises to completely lose the state. That’s all for now! This will be a fun one to revisit a few years down the road as we see what has changed and who has taken over more territory.
